Barcelona took another step towards a second successive Primera Iberdrola title with a resounding 4-1 Clasico win over Real Madrid on Sunday.
Madrid ended the game with 10 players after goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez was sent off for handling the ball outside the area before Olga Carmona added a late consolation from the penalty spot.
Lluis Cortes’ Barca side have now won all 13 of their league games this season, scoring 73 goals and conceding just three in the progress.
Madrid, who have played three games more than the Blaugrana, could have gone top with a win but now find themselves five points off the pace, level with Levante and Atletico Madrid on 34 points.
Sunday’s fixture was just the second-ever official Clasico between Barca and Madrid’s women. Barca won the first meeting between the two teams in the Spanish capital 4-0 in October.
Real Madrid first took steps to create a women’s side in the summer of 2019, when they absorbed the Madrid-based side CD Tacon, who had just achieved promotion to Spain’s top flight.
Tacon trained and played at Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground last season, being beaten 9-1 and 6-0 by Barcelona in the league, before the completion of the merger last summer.
Madrid made nine signings ahead of this season in an attempt to improve a Tacon team that finished 10th in a season that was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
David Aznar’s side have improved remarkably, considering they could have gone top with a win this weekend.
By contrast, Barca ended a five-year wait for the title last season and have finished in the league’s top two for the last nine seasons. In 2019, they became the first Spanish team to reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, beaten by Lyon.
On Friday, a number of Primera Iberdola players released a statement asking the league for a better COVID-19 protocol following the postponement of a number of games.
