Russian police arrest thousands in pro-Navalny protest

Russian authorities have so far detained more than 2,600 demonstrators across the country who are protesting the arrest of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, according to local media.

OVD-Info, a Russian media outlet monitoring arrests in connection with the protests, reported more than 2,660 people had been detained in 80 cities by the local time of 3:50 p.m. Sunday.

It’s the second weekend in a row that Russian police have arrested thousands of pro-Navalny protesters after authorities jailed the outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Police seized Navalny January 17 upon his return to Moscow from Germany, where he received treatment after being poisoned with a deadly nerve agent, which almost killed him.

Navalny is awaiting trial in Matrosskaya Tishina prison, one of Russia’s toughest jails, in connection to a 2014 embezzlement case that the European Court of Human Rights has described as unfair.

Russian authorities claim Navalny breached the terms of his suspended sentence because he chose to stay in Germany and recover from his poisoning instead of reporting regularly to police.

Navalny has said the arrest is illegal, as Russian authorities allowed him to seek treatment in Berlin.
