A small private plane carrying six passengers and a crew of two has crashed into a vacant, two-storey office building in a Milan suburb, killing everyone onboard.
The plane, which took off from Milan’s Linate city airport, was heading for the island of Sardinia, officials said. RAI state TV said the passengers were believed to be French.
Firefighters tweeted that no one other than those onboard were involved in Sunday’s crash near a subway station in San Donato Milanese, a small town near Milan. They said several parked cars were set on fire, but were apparently unoccupied at the time.
A thick column of dark smoke rose from the crash site and was visible for kilometres.
Firefighters were extinguishing the flames of the now-charred building, which reportedly was under renovation.
