Georgia’s ruling party leads local elections amid ‘consistent allegations of intimidation’

Georgia’s governing Georgian Dream party took the lead in Saturday’s local elections, amid observer warnings of an “unlevel playing field.”

According to results released Sunday, the ruling Georgian Dream party won 46.7 percent of the votes, while the United National Movement got 30.7 percent. In the capital Tbilisi, the election will move to a second round, as no candidate won more than 50 percent, Reuters reported.

International observers warned Sunday that while the elections were well-run, they were “marred by wide-spread and consistent allegations of intimidation, vote-buying, pressure on candidates and voters, and an unlevel playing field.”

The announcement of large-scale projects and the involvement of senior state officials had given the governing party an “undue advantage,” the observation mission, which included the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and members of the European Parliament, also said.

The elections were overshadowed by the arrest of Mikheil Saakashvili, the exiled former president of Georgia, on Friday. Nika Melia, the chair of the United National Movement party that Saakashvili founded, had called on people to “liberate both the country and Saakashvili” by going to polling stations.

Earlier this year, the EU brokered a deal between the Georgian government and opposition leaders to end a political stand-off following the country’s October national election. That deal set a trigger for a potential snap election if Georgian Dream failed to achieve a 43 percent threshold in the local elections.
