Journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov win Nobel Peace Prize

Journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

Ressa, from the Philippines, and Muratov, from Russia, were praised by the Nobel committee for their efforts to safeguard the freedom of expression, “which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”

The award includes a gold medal and a cash prize of €968,000.

Other contenders had included the Belarusian opposition activists including Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, climate change activist Greta Thunberg, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the COVAX vaccine initiative, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and the Global Alliance for Tax Justice, and the International Fact-Checking Network at the Poynter Institute.
